Best Personal Development Books

My name is Andrea Hood, and I am a personal development junkie. I love to learn – I mean seriously LOVE to learn.

Growing up  I was a straight A student, graduated at the top of my class in both high school and college. While others were partying, I would spend my weekends working on homework and projects, always getting excited when I had new research projects to work on. (To be fair, I did do some serious partying in college, but still made Dean’s List!)

After college, I was lost for a few years before I started to get the itch that I needed to do something more with my life. That’s when I decided to go back to school to become a health coach, and when I decided to partner with USANA Health Sciences, a Network Marketing company.

Now I know Network Marketing gets a ton of bad rap from folks as being this sleazy sales thing, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that when you join the right company, it is anything but sleazy. The skills and tools I’ve gained since joining USANA are unmatchable compared to any formal schooling I had previously.

Since joining USANA I have met some of my closest friends (women who have a passion to serve the world as much as I do – nothing beats a community of like-minded people!). I gained financial knowledge and paid off my debt (I’ve  been living debt-free since September 2013). I have grown leaps and bounds in every sense – spiritually, emotionally, physically – and that’s all thanks to personal development.

I dedicate time each day to my personal development, and that’s typically in the form of reading. If you’re someone who’s always on-the-go like I am, I highly recommend tuning into audio books. You can download them from the iTunes store or Amazon, or check them out from your local library.

Below is a list of my favorite personal development books that have really helped me on my journey. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have!

Best Personal Development Books

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki: This book is a serious game-changer when it comes to the way you think about money. Think of it as a gateway to educating yourself about how money really works, or should I say, how you can make money work for you. My husband and I both listened to the audio version of this book – I finished it in 2 days, and he finished it in 1 day. It’s that good. (And really easy to understand.)

15 Laws of Invaluable Growth by John C. Maxwell: I kinda love John C. Maxwell – love him in the way that I want him to be my grandfather kind of way. He’s full of knowledge and inspiration, and if you listen to this book on audio, you’ll experience his oh-so-soothing voice. Whenever I listen to this book (which is like 4 or 5 times now) I feel like John actually cares about me and helping me succeed in life. If you’re ready to grow, this book is for you.

Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte: Oh how I love Danielle LaPorte! The Desire Map is half book, half workbook. It helps you dive deep into what you really want in life. A great time to read this book is when you’re going through a transition, need to be re-inspired, or right before the New Year. I read it last Decemeber and it has completely shaped my 2015. I plan on reading it again this holiday season. You can click here to purchase a copy of the Desire Map (This is an affiliate link. Thank you for your support – I so, so appreciate it!).

Untethered Soul by Michael Singer: Are you ready to get deep? This book is deep. And I mean DEEP. It literally took me months to read, because I kept going back and reading pages over and over again. Really eye-opening when it comes to how much power your mind has over your everyday experiences.

Sacred Success by Barbara Stanny: Another great read to educate yourself about your finances! Barbara Stanny shares her journey and insights when it comes to living an abundant life. Her story is really inspiring!

5 Reasons Investing In Yourself Will Better Your Life

I just got back from a spiritual mastermind retreat last week and it was INCREDIBLE! Wow. Just wow. I got so many ah-has from the experience, received a ton of clarity, got some amazing feedback from my peers in the group and our leader Jenny Fenig. It took me a few days to recalibrate and all put all of this awesomeness into words, but now that I have I wanted to share it with you 🙂 Today I’m going to share with you 5 reasons investing in yourself will better your life.

5 Reasons Investing In Yourself Will Better Your Life by Andrea Hood

Jenny Fenig and I at the GLOW mastermind retreat

So often I hear things like, “I want to do what she’s doing!” or “I wish my life was like so-and-so!” even “Andrea, I want to be like you!” While myself and so-and-so are incredibly flattered by statements like these, we both want to to live a life that YOU love. Your very own life.

And the only way you can do that is to say YES to growing, YES to changing, YES to creating that very life that you so admire, and INVEST in yourself.

There’s no better way to grow than investing in yourself. I don’t know where I would be today if I didn’t start investing in myself nearly 5 years ago. Investing in myself – and I do so personally by means of coaches, mastermind groups, training schools, healthy foods, monthly yoga passes, reading personal development books – has been the best decisions I’ve made in my life thus far.

Seriously. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Here are 5 reasons investing in yourself will better your life:

You GROW. Spiritually. Emotionally. Mentally. Socially. Financially. Your cells literally change and you’ll never be the same. I can’t explain how amazing this feeling, this growth is in words, but I’ll sum up with EPIC.

You meet people like you. Feel like there’s no one you can relate to? Feel like your the only person in your city/town/community/state/whatever who gets you? I get it. That’s how I felt back in 2012 when I decided to sign up for health coach training school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I was lonely, isolated, felt like I didn’t belong. IIN opened up a whole new world to me – in particular, new friends all over the world. My journey has taken lots of fun twists and turns since I said YES to investing in myself 4 years ago, and the ride has been nothing short of spectacular. The like-minded people that I’ve met – honestly, they blow my mind away. I surround myself with these people daily – these amazing souls who are making the world a better place – and I wouldn’t want it any other way. They help make me a better me.

Here I am with Jenny Fenig and the GLOW girls! Connecting with like-minded ladies lights my SOUL! Source: Jenny Fenig

Doors open where there were only walls before. As cliche as it may sound, it’s 100% true. Heck, the shit I’ve manifested in my life over the past few years has been cray cray and new opportunities appear all. the. time. Everything from quitting my job and moving 900 miles away from everyone and everything I knew, to working as a virtual assistant for one of the most well-know health coaches in the biz, to starting the Badass & Bare Podcast, to the connections I’ve made, the places I’ve traveled to…. all because I continue to invest in myself and making my dreams my reality. The more I say YES to life, the more life says YES back.

You learn your purpose in the world – and you know, without one once of a doubt, that you’re here for a reason. You spend your life living this purpose because you know that if you don’t, you’re doing a serious disservice to others. This purpose brings you endless amounts of joy, love, and energy. Your purpose doesn’t need to even be a full-time gig for you, heck it’s not for me anymore – it can be a part-time passion project that lights you up inside as you share it with others.

You become a happier person. For reasons 1-4.

You want to sign up to be a health coach? Just do it. You want to start taking better care of yourself? Sign-up for my FREE 5-Day Free Yo Self Challenge, ’cause I’m an expert at that shit girl.  You want to make more money? Invest in a business coach. You want to be happier? Start doing things that bring you joy. You want new like-minded friends? Go out and find them. You want to start a blog/podcast/business? Just f’n do it.

Whatever it is, JUST DO IT.

Say YES to life and life will say YES back to you.

INVEST in yourself.

New Year Reflections and Goals

New Year Resolutions and Goals

December is a great time for reflection – thinking about the past year and dreaming of where the new year will take you. I for one love this reflection period and always set new goals and intentions for myself, so I thought this last blog post of 2015 would be the perfect opportunity for us to do some reflecting. Now, I’m not for resolutions – I feel like when resolutions aren’t met we feel deflated, broken, not good enough. So I take a different approach to my New Year reflections and goals, and today I’m going to share with you exactly what I do.

Give this writing exercise a try yourself this week and see what unfolds for you in 2016!

1). What are you proud of/what did you ACCOMPLISH in 2015 that served your highest self? What made you a better person?

2). What feelings, things, thoughts, beliefs and/or relationships do you want to LEAVE BEHIND in 2015, and not bring into 2016? I find that writing it all down and then safely burning the paper (or ripping it up if you can’t burn safely) helps me fully detox the shit I want to leave behind.

3). How do you want to FEEL in 2016? A list of goals, where you want to travel, names of people who you want to spend time with, events you want to attend are all great things to add here, just be sure to include how those things will make you feel.

4). For each feeling, list out 1-3 ACTION STEPS that will help you embrace those feelings each day/week/month.

5). Find an ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER to help support you as you go through 2016. Share the goals and feelings you’re looking to embrace in 2016. Like-minded friends or family members, co-workers, folks in your mastermind group, or significant others make great accountability partners! Figure out a time that works best for you both to communicate – is it once monthly on the phone, a Monday morning email check-in each week? Find what works best for you both!

Looking for support as we kick-off 2016? I’m SUPER excited to share with you that I’m now taking a few clients each week for Clarity Session Calls. These calls are for you if you are sick of the daily grind keeping you from reaching your goals and you’re ready to turn your vision into your reality this upcoming year. You can learn more here and sign up for a session!

I’d love to hear from you and your New Year Reflections and Goals! How do you want to feel in 2016? Comment below and let us know.

To rockin’ out in 2016!

5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression

As I sit here writing this post it’s pitch black at 4pm – and I am not happy about it. I have a really, really hard time with the darkness and cold that come in the Fall and Winter months. It’s definitely a case of seasonal depression, or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) as it’s sometimes referred to, and I’ve struggled with it for years. However, over the past few years it has improved quite a bit and I have more control over my depression now, so I wanted to share my 5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression in today’s post.

5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression

1). 5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression: Incorporate self-care into your daily routine

I’ve been big into self-care lately – like really super into it.  In fact, I complied a list of 20 Easy Ways to Practice Self-Care a few weeks ago that gives simple, practical, and no-cost ways that you can take care of you during these long, cold months. People think that self-care is selfish, but I’m here to tell you that it is not selfish, not by any means! It is necessary! If you are busy taking care of others, have a career, starting a business, etc. you need to take care of yourself so that you can feel your best while you completing that never-ending to-do list. When you take care of you, you support your immune system (no more sickness!) and you tend to be much happier!

Tip: Check out my list of 20 ways you can take care of you and give yourself the gift of self-care this week!

2). 5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression: Take a Vitamin D supplement

Did you know that a vitamin D deficiency is a world problem for both adults and children, and could be the reason why you get sick every fall and winter? Some research studies go as far as saying a vitamin D deficiency is the reason behind degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Vitamin D enters the body through sunlight – which there is a lack of in the fall and winter – and does not come from foods. The only way you can get vitamin D naturally, besides for the sun, is through supplement form. I take USANA Health Sciences Vitamin D supplement (that’s a link to my online vitamin store where you can purchase the Vitamin D at up to 20% off retail pricing). I have seen a difference in both my mood and immune system since I started taking it and I highly recommend it to everyone I meet. Click here to learn more about vitamin D from USANA.

Vitamin D

3). 5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression: Move your body

Whether you’re a beginner and take 15 minute walks at your lunch break, or you’re a fitness pro who does yoga or Crossfit daily, moving your body each day promotes blood circulation throughout your body. Fresh blood means fresh oxygen – fresh oxygen means a healthy, happy brain. {Vitamin D helps with post-workout recovery too!}

Tip: Each morning when you wake up, spend 5-10 minutes doing gentle stretches to help circulation. It will also enhance your focus throughout the day.

4). 5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression: Eat clean

The sugary treats are tempting and delicious, but they are also addicting. Avoid sugary foods as much as possible because they create a roller-coaster with your moods – happy one minute {when you get the sugar rush} and sad the next {once the sugar burns off}.  They also increase inflammation in the body, which in turn increases your waist line and your chances for illness. Not cool!

Sidenote: this weekend I did a lot of indulging – pizza, fresh bread and cider donuts from the farmers market, and ice cream, TWICE. The only vegetable I had all weekend was a green juice on Saturday. And guess what? I felt like complete shit. My moods were all over the place and I was completely exhausted even though I was sleeping 8+ hours each night. I mean we’re talking tears at one point because I was so tired. The food-mood connection is a very real thing – especially if you suffer from seasonal depression like I do. Make sure to be extra cautious of your food choices this time of year!

Just say no

Tip: Try and stick with a 90/10 rule – eating a healthy, clean diet full of fruits, veggies, healthy fats, and lean proteins 90% of the time.

5). 5 Biggest Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression: Sleep

Think about it: most mammals are hibernating this time of year, but not us humans – we keep go-go-going. It’s important to take time and rest during this time of year, like our bodies are designed to do.

Tip: Turn off the TV at night and get to bed 30 minutes earlier.

For my friends in the Southern Hemisphere, you are entering your warmer, longer days and I am super jealous of you. Just bookmark this post so you have it in March/April when you’ll need it.

For my friends in the Northern Hemisphere, know that you are not alone and we will get through these months together!!!

Now, I want to hear from you! Do you suffer from seasonal depression? What helps ease your symptoms? Let me know in the comments below!

To feeling your best! xo

Healthy Egg Nog Recipe

{This Healthy Egg Nog Recipe first appeared on MindBodyGreen, but it is sooo tasty I just had to share it with you all, too. Enjoy!}

Healthy Egg Nog Recipe

When I was a child I used to beg my mom to get egg nog at the store when we would shop during the holiday season. I LOVED egg nog and I would drink it all up when she bought it. Now that I’m older and more health conscious, my obsession for egg nog has subsided and I only allow myself a glass or two as a treat – especially now that I’m choosing to be dairy-free.

This year I’ve been seeing pictures of dairy-free egg nog all over social media, but I’m having difficulties finding it in my neck of the woods. So I set out to make my own yummy homemade version of one of my childhood favorites.

Not only is this recipe simple to make, there are only a few ingredients you need to use – why add more unnecessary stress during an already hectic time of year?!  Give my Dairy-Free Cinnamon Egg Nog a try at your next holiday gathering – you’ll be a hit, I promise.

Healthy Egg Nog Recipe

Makes approximately 2 1/3 cups

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/8 cup Grade B organic maple syrup
  • 3 organic egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon all spice
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

  1. Separate your egg yolks from the whites and set aside in a small bowl. {Cook your whites up for breakfast – don’t let them go to waste!}
  2. Place the milks, maple syrup, and spices in a medium sized sauce pan and whisk to combine. Heat over medium heat, whisking occasionally so it doesn’t catch and burn, until steam begins to appear, about 5 minutes.
  3. Slowly pour 1/2 cup of the hot liquid into the egg yolk bowl, whisking to combining. Make sure you do this slowly so it does not cook the egg yolks.
  4. Once combined, add the yolk mixture to the sauce pan with the remaining liquid. Cook for an additional 5 minutes over medium heat, again stirring occasionally so it doesn’t catch and burn.
  5. Let cool and either serve, or store in a covered glass jar in the refrigerator.
  6. Optional: adding a splash of pumpkin flavored vodka makes for an extra delicious treat!

Cheers! xo

How do you want to feel during the holidays?

How do you want to feel during the holidays?

The holidays can be a joyous time of year, but also emotional and heavy for some folks – myself included. To be completely honest, while I love Thanksgiving, I’m not really a big fan of the rest of the holiday season. Too much to do, not enough time to do it, combined with the lack of daylight, and the feeling that the holidays are being shoved down my throat everywhere I turn, are a few of the reasons why I always feel overwhelmed and not grounded this time of year. This year I decided to do things a bit differently. I’m making sure I’m completely grounded and present by engaging in daily self-care, and I’m focusing on my feelings. I’m curious to know, how do you want to feel during the holidays this year?

I’m really into Danielle Laporte and her Core Desired Feelings, which she talks about in her book The Desire Map. For those who are unfamiliar with her and her work, Core Desired Feelings are basically how you want to feel in your daily life. The deep down feelings that you crave – the ones that make you whole.

For me, the first 3 feelings that come to mind this holiday season are – calm, present, and connected.

Calm, not getting overly emotional when past holidays play over in my head. Things I’ll do to help me stay calm: go to yoga 3x a week, eat grounding root vegetables, and take the pups for their daily morning walk.

Present, staying in the moment and paying attention to what is happening around me so I can fully enjoy my time with my loved ones. Things I’ll do to help me stay present: Meditate each morning for 10 minutes. Whenever I meditate, it helps me stay focused and present throughout the day!

Connected, on every level to my loved ones. Things I’ll do to help me say connected: TURN MY PHONE OFF when I’m with family and friends.

If you find yourself needing some support this holiday season, I’d love to have you join me for my Free Yo Self 5-Day Challenge! Start whenever you’d like by signing up here. You’ll get daily emails with videos and simple action steps to help support you in whatever you want to feel this holiday season. Be prepared to relax, unwind, and take a few minutes each day to solely focus on you – unapologetically. Sounds terrible, right?! Ha! Sign up here!

How do you want to feel during the holidays? I would love to hear how you want to feel this holiday season, so if you feel comfortable share your feelings below in the comments section. Writing it down sets the intention!

Happy Holidays to you and yours! xo

Healthy Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far – a day devoted to all the things I love most: food, family, friends, and gratitude. It’s a fun day full of indulgences and feasting on lots of amazing food. And while I love to indulge, especially during the holidays, I also like to do so with a healthy-twist. Enter my Healthy Pumpkin Pie Recipe 🙂

My Healthy Pumpkin Pie Recipe has a gluten-free crust, contains no refined sugars or dairy – but it does contain a dose of healthy fats and pure deliciousness that your whole family will love after feasting on a holiday meal.

Plus, this pie is super-simple to make – especially if you have a Vitamix or high speed blender.
My Pumpkin Pie with a Gluten-Free crust is a bit of an indulgence, but not one you need to feel guilty about eating on Thanksgiving. There are far worse dessert choices than this yummy one!

Healthy Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Healthy Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

For the pie filling:

  • 1 can organic pumpkin puree, NOT pumpkin pie mix
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice

For the crust:

  • 1 cup dates, pitted (fresh medjool dates work best)
  • 1 cup pecans
  • 2 Tablespoons pumpkin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
  • Place all of the crust ingredients into a Vitamix, high speed blender, or food processor. Process on high until the mixture is in little pieces and sticks together. You want to be able to make the mixture into a large ball and have it stick together. If the mixture is too sticky, add in 1 or 2 Tablespoons of coconut flour; if it’s too dry and flour like, add in a few more dates.
  • Take the crust mixture and put it in the middle of a 9″ pie pan. Flatten the mixture out so it covers the bottom evenly and goes up the sides of the pan slightly.
  • Rinse out your Vitamix/blender/processor.
  • Place all of the pie filling ingredients into the Vitamix/blender/processor. Process on high until it is combined well.
  • Pour the pie filling over the crust and smooth out evenly.
  • Cook in the oven for 30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the middle doesn’t “wiggle” when you move the pie pan.
  • Let cool on a cooling rack before serving.
  • Enjoy!
